Background:
Take Your Parents to School
Day® is a comprehensive, three-day nationwide educational program,
developed by Salomon Smith Barney, that took place in schools across the
country from February 15-17, 2000.
Over 120 classes from schools within
20 states participated in this year's contest. The classroom teacher, provided
with a complete curriculum and all relevant workbook materials, taught days 1
and 2 of the program. The formal program concluded on Day 3 with a Salomon
Smith Barney Financial Consultant bringing the financial markets to life and
introducing a national stock portfolio contest. Parents were also encouraged to
participate on Day 3 to share the classroom experience and begin a financial
dialogue with their children. Take Your Parents to School Day® was
introduced in 1998 within selected schools in suburban Boston, Chicago and New
York. Based on the positive feedback from teachers and parents, the program
expanded nationally in 1999.
The Salomon Smith Barney Take Your Parents
to School Day® curriculum includes:
* Developing basic financial
literacy.
* Setting both long-term and short-term goals.
* Learning a
financial vocabulary.
* Understanding the difference between saving and
investing.
* Discussing how securities are bought and sold.
The
program is part of a broader initiative geared toward parents and future
investors. The Salomon Smith Barney Young Investors Network web site,
http://www.salomonsmithbarney.com/yin, a special segment of
the Salomon Smith Barney Access internet site, supports this initiative by
introducing young people to the concepts of setting financial goals, budgeting
and investing. The site also features information for parents, including a
future education cost calculator with links to more than 1,300 colleges and
universities. In addition, the site offers future investors an opportunity to
create a "cyber-portfolio" with up to eight stocks they can select and track on
a daily basis.
Salomon Smith Barney is committed to helping parents and
their children navigate the economic challenges on the road to financial
security. For more information on how to better plan for a young investors'
future financial independence, parents may request a free copy of Salomon Smith
Barney's 16-page booklet, Empowering the Young Investor: A Guide for You and
Your Parents, by calling a local Salomon Smith Barney branch office. The
booklet is designed to further the financial dialog between parents and their
children. It includes three tabloid-style booklets designed specifically for
young investors in middle school, high school and college.
