The Recreation Department was originally established as a Recreation Commission in the 1950's. The main objective was to build parks and playgrounds. Today, the Wall Township Recreation Department is responsible for maintaining the township's athletic fields and a vast number of recreational activities and events for township residents ranging from pre-school to senior citizens.

The Recreation Department consists of the coordinator, Bryan Haltigan, assistant Kathy Martone and three maintenance personnel. Currently the Recreation Advisory Committee, which is appointed by the Township Committee, meets monthly to discuss the programs, activities and business of the Recreation Department.

Special events throughout the year, sponsored by the Recreation Department are: The Creative Valentine Contest, Easter Egg Hunt, Firecracker 5 Races, The Halloween Costume Contest and various bus trips. Many programs are offered to the children of Wall Township. They include: Biddy Basketball, tennis, golf, art, summer camp, summer basketball, pre-school ballet pre-school art and Challenger sports programs for children with special needs. The Recreation Department co-sponsors programs with area businesses, including gymnastics, swimming, soccer and bowling. For adults there are Watercolor classes, yoga and softball. The seniors of Wall Township can enjoy exercise classes, line dancing and bus trips.

Many of the programs offered are held on the lower level of the Municipal Building. Various groups and non-profit organizations also use the four rooms located on the lower level for meetings, registrations and other events. There are approximately 70 - 80 meetings and/or programs held each month in the Community Room and the adjacent rooms.

The Wall Recreation Department continues to expand and improve upon the programs and activities offered to the residents. Future plans are being made to upgrade the walking track at the Municipal Complex along with adding tennis courts, a basketball court, softball field, an ice skating area and a skateboarding park.
