Helping Children Say No!
TIPS FOR PARENTS

Here are some tips to help your children resist the pressure to use drugs:

• Don't be afraid to talk with children about drugs, tobacco and alcohol.
• Set a good example…your children learn most from watching the way you behave.
• Participate in your child's life…get to know his or her friends.
• Set clear rules…make it very clear that use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs (ATOD) is unacceptable in any situation.
• Be available...let your child know you will be there if they need to be picked up from any party or uncomfortable situation.
• Supervise…every party in your home.
• Make sure you are aware of your child's plans at all times.
• Learn…as much as you can about any party your child is attending. Always feel that you can contact the host's parents and ask questions.
• Be your child's excuse for not using drugs...let them tell their friends that you will be upset and punish such behavior.
• Keep reminding your child of how important they are…say "I Love You" often and praise them. Let them understand that you will do anything to protect them from the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
• Learn to listen to children.
• Help children to feel good about themselves.
• Be a good role model.
• Make specific family rules about your children not using drugs and alcohol or smoking cigarettes.
• Encourage healthy, creative activities.
• Team up with other parents.

Seek professional help if you suspect that your child is having a problem. For more information call us, visit our web site or contact your municipal alliance.
