![]() "HOW TO RAISE DRUG-FREE KIDS" |
Twenty years of scientific research has shown that direct parental involvement in the life of a child is the most protective factor in increasing the odds that a kid will remain drug-free.
Keep kids busy. Kids who are busy with an after school job, extra
curricular activities, or household chores are less likely to get involved
with drugs and drinking.
As parents, set a good example. Don't
use drugs or abuse alcohol. Actions speak louder than words.
Know where your child is. Teens who
smoke, drink or use pot are less likely to tell their parents where they
are on weekends or after school.
Know the most dangerous times. The
transition from age 12 to 13 marks a critical turning point in a child's
access to drugs: by age 13 most teens know a student who uses and sells
pot, acid, cocaine and heroin.
Be sure to make one thing crystal
clear to your child -- you feel strongly that drugs are dangerous and you
do not want your child to use them.
Communicate. To a child, a parent's
silence can mean acceptance.
