Biography of Mary L Burne

Born and raised in North Jersey, Mayor Burne has been a resident of Wall Township almost fity years. Mrs. Burne is married to Martin J. Burne and they have one daughter, Mary, who is married to Douglas Birdsall. Mayor Burne has two grandchildren, Martin and Anna.

After graduating from high school, Mrs. Burne attended the Berkeley Secretarial School, in addition to taking numerous other courses throughout her career. Although Mrs. Burne has been a realtor since 1963, the Mayor lists her occupation as “Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Realtor,” showing the importance of family in her life.

Mayor Burne is a very active member of the community having served as the first woman appointed to the Wall Township Board of Adjustment, Wall Township Planning Board, various Parent Teacher Organizations, Red Oak Women’s Club, Manasquan Elks Auxiliary, Pride of Wall Seniors, Old Wall Historical Society, Wall Township Environmental Advisory Committee, Manasquan AARP, the Monmouth County Planning Board and The Manasquan River Watershed Association. Mrs. Burne is also a member of many professional organizations including South Monmouth Board of Realtors, Past President and Director of the New Jersey Association of Realtors, Association of Environmental Authorities and the Water Environment Federation.

Mayor Burne has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards among them being the Environmental Award from the County Commission of the Status of Women, NJ Association of Realtors for Clean Ocean Action, the Association of Environmental Authorities Outstanding Commissioner Award and recipient of a lifetime membership of the National PTA from the West Belmar School.

Mayor Burne was first elected to the Township Committee in 1992 and has since been reelected three times. Mrs. Burne served as Mayor in 1998 and again in 2003. Mrs. Burne decided to run for Township Committee because she wanted to contribute to the effort of improving Wall Township and feels that her many years of experience as a volunteer in numerous community organizations, as well as her service as a member and chairman on both the Wall Township Planning Board and Board of Adjustment, gives her the knowledge and experience to contribute in a substantial and positive way to the development of our town.
